P0101 — MAF circuit range/performance
This is a plausibility complaint, not a missing-signal one: the airflow sensor is reporting a live, moving number — it just doesn't match what the computer expects given everything else it can see.

The short version
P0101 means the mass air flow sensor's signal is present and moving, but the computer ran a plausibility check against other things it knows — throttle position, engine speed, sometimes manifold pressure — and the airflow number didn't hold up. That's a different complaint from P0102, which means the signal went quiet or near-zero. P0101 is the sensor talking; the computer just doesn't believe what it's saying.
By far the most common reason: a contaminated sensing element under- or over-reporting airflow by a proportion that grows implausible as conditions change. Range/performance vs. a dead signal
The MAF family splits cleanly into two kinds of complaint, and knowing which one you have decides where you look first:
- Circuit faults (P0102 low, P0103 high) mean the electrical signal itself went outside a hard voltage or frequency window — near zero, or pinned at maximum. That's a connector, wiring, or dead-sensor story, and cleaning a perfectly functional element does nothing for it.
- Range/performance faults (P0101) mean the signal stayed inside that electrical window the whole time — it just reported a number that doesn't reconcile with the rest of what the engine is doing. That's where contamination, and genuinely restricted airflow the sensor is reporting honestly, both live.
The distinction is worth a moment because it changes the fix entirely: a P0102 sends you to the connector first; a P0101 sends you to the intake path — the sensor itself, what's upstream of it, or what's downstream.
The alive-and-plausible check
Before diving into the full fuel-trim comparison, a fast sanity check confirms you're actually looking at a range/performance fault and not something that's drifted toward a circuit fault since the code last set:
Park on level ground, transmission in park or neutral, parking brake set. Never run an engine in an enclosed garage.
- Put the MAF reading (g/s) on screen at a warm idle. A rough smell test for most passenger engines: very loosely, about one gram per second for every litre of displacement — a 2.0L four somewhere around 2–4 g/s, a big V8 more. Treat it as a sanity check, not a spec.
- Blip the throttle. A live signal jumps immediately, then settles. If it doesn't respond at all, that's drifted toward P0102 territory — a dead or near-dead signal, not a range/performance one.
- If it responds but the idle number itself looks implausible — unusually low for the engine, or unusually high — you've confirmed the plausibility problem the code is describing, and it's time for the full trim comparison.
When it's contamination
A film of oil or dust on the sensing element insulates it, so it loses heat more slowly than clean air moving past it would, and it reports less air than is really flowing — worse as airflow rises, since the error is proportional. When it isn't contamination
P0101 doesn't always mean the sensor is lying — sometimes it's reporting honestly on genuinely bad airflow:
- A badly restricted or collapsed air filter can starve the engine enough that the MAF's honest low reading fails the plausibility check against throttle position and RPM. Cheap to rule out — look at the filter.
- Air getting in downstream of the sensor — a split intake boot, a loose clamp — means more air reached the engine than the MAF ever measured. The lean result looks like contamination, but the pattern is the opposite: worst at idle, easing at cruise. See vacuum leak symptoms for that signature.
- Wiring or a connector introducing noise into an otherwise-alive signal, which can look like a plausibility failure without being contamination at all.
- A genuinely failed sensor that hasn't yet drifted all the way to a dead circuit — less common, and usually confirmed only once contamination and airflow have both been ruled out.
Is it safe to drive?
Usually, in the short term. Wrong airflow readings mean wrong fuelling either direction, so expect rough idle, hesitation, and worse economy, and a lean condition severe enough to misfire is a real risk to the catalytic converter over time. A flashing check engine light is a different, more urgent situation regardless of which code set it.
What a phone can't see
What it genuinely gives you: the live g/s reading and its response to a throttle blip, fuel trims at idle and cruise (the test that actually separates contamination from other causes), the freeze frame, and companion codes like P0102 or a lean code that reframe the diagnosis.
What it cannot do:
- Show you the sensing element. Whether it's visibly dirty is a look, and it's the check that tells you whether cleaning has any chance of working.
- Find unmetered air getting in downstream. That's a smoke test.
- Measure the signal at the connector to separate a marginal sensor from marginal wiring — that needs a meter and a wiring diagram.
Common questions
What's the difference between P0101 and P0102?+
P0102 means the MAF's electrical signal itself went quiet or near-zero — a circuit fault, usually the connector or wiring. P0101 means the signal stayed alive and moved the whole time, but the number it reported didn't reconcile with throttle position, RPM, or other data the computer had — a plausibility fault, not a missing-signal one.
Does P0101 always mean the MAF sensor is dirty?+
It's the most common cause, but not the only one. A badly restricted air filter can make the sensor's honest low reading fail the plausibility check. Air leaking in downstream of the sensor causes the opposite mismatch. Wiring noise or a genuinely failed sensor are less common possibilities. Will cleaning the MAF sensor fix P0101?+
Often, yes — contamination is the leading cause and cleaning genuinely fixes it. Check first: compare fuel trims at warm idle against a steady cruise. A pattern that gets worse as airflow rises points at contamination. Trims that are worst at idle and improve at cruise point at a vacuum leak instead, which cleaning does nothing for.
Can I drive with a P0101 code?+
Usually, in the short term — expect rough idle, hesitation, and worse fuel economy while the mixture is off in one direction or the other. A sustained lean condition that progresses to a misfire is a real risk to the catalytic converter, and a flashing check engine light means stop driving regardless of which code set it.
